Federal Riding Redistribution: Milton

Dear Friends,

As your Member of Parliament, I wanted to take this moment to make you all aware of some potential upcoming changes with regards to Milton’s federal electoral boundaries.

In accordance with the rules established in our nation’s Constitution, after every 10-year census our federal electoral boundaries must be reviewed and some are realigned to ensure fair representation by population.

This past August, the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario issued its proposal for redistribution which includes significant changes to Halton Region. These changes would split the riding of Milton into two ridings: Burlington–Milton West and Georgetown–Milton East. For a detailed breakdown of the proposed changes, you can visit: https://redecoupage-redistribution-2022.ca

Federal Electoral Districts Redistribution information including electoral boundaries, the redistribution process, commissions, and how to participate

In establishing the new boundaries, the Commission took into consideration:

  • communities of identity and interest

  • the historical pattern of an electoral district

  • manageable geographic size for districts in sparsely populated rural and northern regions

Before any changes come into effect, there will be opportunities for members of the community to make their voices heard on the matter. These submissions are a vital part of the redistribution process and the Commission actively uses this feedback when deciding on its final changes.

What you need to know

The Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act requires that parties wishing to make representations to the Commission give notice in writing to the Secretary of the Commission.

A Public Hearing Participation Form is available at redistribution2022.ca and it is the form of notice to be completed by anyone wishing to make oral representations.

The Commission has set Sunday, September 25, 2022 as the deadline for when the Public Hearing Participation Form is to be filed.

Residents will have two opportunities to present submissions regarding the newly proposed redistributions:

  • a virtual hearing for Halton has been scheduled for September 28th at 6:30 p.m - details will be provided to participants

  • an in-person public consultation has been scheduled for October 12th at 6:30 p.m. at the FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton located at 1010 Main Street East

The Commission will consider submissions from members of the public and the House of Commons before crafting a final decision on the new federal electoral boundaries for Ontario.

Democracy is hard work that requires constant effort and engagement of our communities, if you are interested or have concerns, I hope you will consider taking an active role and making sure the Commission hears your voice.
