FROM THE TOP OF THE PODIUM TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS
As someone who grew up in Halton, I learned early on that we have no shortage of community leaders, and this is what I aspire to be. Whether it be throughout my athletic career, or as the Member of Parliament for Milton, I have always strived to listen and learn from my neighbours. I represented Canada at four Summer Olympic Games, winning one gold, two silvers and a bronze. One of the proudest moments in my life was being the flag bearer in Athens and Beijing.
I am a first generation Canadian, and I grew up at Chautauqua Co-op in North Oakville with my younger brother and single mom. Growing up in community housing taught me the importance of a strong compassionate community that works together.
I joined the Burloak Canoe Club as a teenager and found I had a talent. My athletic career allowed me opportunities to volunteer for organizations like Right To Play, WaterAID, Special Olympics, Parkinson’s Canada, and the David Suzuki Foundation.
I have served as Chair of the Canadian Olympic Athletes’ Commission, and was a member of the Federal Government’s working group for Gender Inclusion and Gender Based Violence in Sport. You might also sometimes find me giving a talk to students at local schools in Milton, where I live with my Egyptian street dog, Cairo.
I am honoured that my neighbours in Milton have chosen me to be their voice in Ottawa, and I am thankful for the people who have placed their trust and confidence in me.
